The mountain Esja or Esjan (The Esja), like locals call it, is situated about 10 km north of Reykjavík past the town Mosfellsbær. The Esja rises about 914 meters (2,999 ft) above sea level and is a volcanic mountain range made of basalt and tuff.
The Esja is the landmark mountain of Reykjavík and thousands of locals and visitors hike the mountain every year. The most popular hiking path leads to the summits Þverfellshorn (780 meters) and is relatively easy. Most people hike to the big rock called Steinn (Stone), he rest of the path is a bit more challenging.
The path is well marked with signs along the way and is divided into sections. The signs demonstrate how long and challenging the path ahead will be, it is very important to read the signs and stay on the paths. From the top the view, on a good day, is amazing over the city.
To get to Esja drive through the town Mosfellsbær on Ring Road 1 towards Esjustofa. From there the hike up to Steinn takes about one and a half to two hours to the top.
