Vatnshellir cave or the Water Cave is located just off the road about 10 minute drive from the old fishing village Hellnar on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. The cave is about 8000 years old, created in a volcanic eruption nearby. It is about 200 meters long and goes 35 meters below the surface.

Vatnshellir is one of the most visited cave in Iceland but the cave was closed for public few years ago by the National Park to protect it. Guided tours from approved guides by the National Park are available daily all year round.

Directions

Vatnshellir cave is located about 2 hours and 30 minutes (194 km) drive from Reykjavík. Take Ring Road nr. 1 towards the town Borgarnes and from there take road nr. 54. Drive for about 1 hour and 30 minutes towards the town Hellnar and from there the cave is just off the road in about 10 minutes drive.
