Hvolsvöllur is located in the south part of Iceland between the town Hella in the west and the village Skógar in the east. It is located about 100 kilometres from Reykjavik the capital city of Iceland

Hvolsvöllur is a small town on the south coast of Iceland, different from many towns or villages in Iceland it is located inland, not nearby the coastline. The town started to build up in the beginning of the 20th century when industry and technology was taking over. The location was good for transporting and trading goods around the area to nearby farms and it was also located by the main road towards the South. As farming was growing and the farmer's were able to product more the town got bigger.

One of the Iceland´s most known Saga´s the saga of Njáll (Njálssaga or Brennu-Njáls saga) takes place in the area around Hvolsvöllur. At the Njáls Saga Center you can get information about the saga and the life of the Vikings in the old days.

Because of the location of the town it is perfect place for making food products and therefore there is one of the biggest food production companies in Iceland located in Hvolsvöllur, called Sláturfélags Suðurlands.

In the past years the town has been growing fast due to increasing in tourists in Iceland. you can find grocery store, health care, garage, pharmacy and the well known local product and souvenir store Sveitabúðin UNA. The town has also a good selection of accommodations and restaurants.

Lava centre is a big exhibition located in Hvolsvöllur where you can find all the information you need about the geology of Iceland like the volcanic activity and earthquakes, it's the perfect place to stop by on your way around south Iceland.

Hvolsvöllur is not far away from many of the main attractions in South Iceland it is near by great valley of Þórsmörk (Valley of Thor) and the Landmannalaugar geothermal area as well as the waterfall Seljalandsfoss and the volcano Hekla.
