Sólfarið or “The Sun Voyager” is a sculpture made by Jón Gunnar Árnason an icelandic sculptor and artist. The sculpture was unveiled on the birthday of Reykjavík on 18th of August 1990 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city. The sculpture sits by the Sæbraut road in Reykjavík.

Even though there was some dispute about the eventual location of the sculpture on Sæbraut road, the spot is beautiful for photography with Mount Esja in the background.

The Sun Voyager is made of quality stainless steel and looks like a Viking ship. It is understandable that visitors think of it as a viking ship when travelling in the land of sagas but according to Jón Gunnar the sculpture is a dreamboat, an ode to the sun. Jón thinks that the observer himself should become a participant in the overall creation of his works, so the unique quality of the Sun Voyager is being able to carry the observer to wherever his mind takes him.

The Sun Voyager is located along Sæbraut in Reykjavík not far from the city center and Harpa Concert Hall.
