Itinerary
Meet at Midgard Base Camp
Start at the gateway to Þórsmörk
Check in at Midgard Base Camp in Hvolsvöllur at least 15 minutes before the departure time in your booking. Meet your mountain guide, review the day’s conditions and set out by Super Jeep towards the highlands.
Super Jeep journey into Þórsmörk
River crossings and volcanic terrain
Leave the main road for rough tracks and unbridged rivers. The Super Jeep journey is essential access to Þórsmörk and an experience in itself, with glacier water, black sands and steep green slopes drawing closer.
A trail selected for the day
Local guiding, not a fixed one-size-fits-all route
Your guide selects a suitable route from options such as Tindfjallahringur, Hvannárgil or Hestagötur. Expect 6–12 kilometres of walking over uneven paths, with the exact trail based on weather, trail conditions and the group.
Birch forests, canyons and ridgelines
Þórsmörk at walking pace
Hike through native birch woodland, river-carved gullies and open ridges. The reward is a close-up encounter with the valley’s contrast of lush vegetation, black volcanic terrain and views towards Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull.
Return to Hvolsvöllur
A final Super Jeep ride through the highlands
After the hike, rejoin the vehicle for the river crossings and scenic return to Midgard Base Camp. The arrival time varies with the selected route and conditions, so keep the evening flexible.
