Afternoon Volcano Hiking Tour – Fagradalsfjall
Feel free to contact us
Description
Join us for an unforgettable afternoon volcano hiking tour to Fagradalsfjall, Iceland’s most talked-about eruption site in recent years. Located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, this is where dramatic eruptions between 2021 and 2023 reshaped the landscape and captured global attention.
Departure from Reykjavik
We depart from Reykjavik in the afternoon and head southwest toward the Reykjanes Peninsula, an active volcanic region sitting directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Arrival at Fagradalsfjall eruption site
Upon arrival, your guide leads you across newly formed lava fields toward the eruption area in Geldingadalir valley. The route follows marked hiking trails used during the recent eruptions.
The volcano hike
This is a moderate to challenging hike (approximately 2.5–4 hours round trip depending on conditions). The terrain consists of uneven lava, gravel paths and natural slopes. Your guide will share fascinating insight into Iceland’s volcanic systems, plate tectonics and how new land is formed.
Witness Iceland’s newest landscapes
Although active lava flow depends on current volcanic activity, the steaming lava fields, craters and vast black landscapes remain one of Iceland’s most powerful natural sights. Even outside active eruption phases, the area is visually dramatic and geologically extraordinary.
Return to Reykjavik
After exploring the area and allowing time for photos, we hike back and return to Reykjavik in the evening.
