Description

Departure from Lake Mývatn: Start early in the morning and head into the remote North Iceland Highlands in a rugged super jeep.

Highlands drive and scenic stops: The route is all about raw wilderness, wide horizons, and volcanic landscapes. Depending on road and weather conditions, you may stop at places such as Hrossaborg crater, Gljúfrasmiður waterfall, Drekagil gully, the Dyngjusandur desert, and the Holuhraun lava field from the 2014 eruption.

Herðubreiðarlindir oasis: Visit the famous green oasis at the foot of Herðubreið, a striking contrast to the surrounding black sands and lava.

Askja caldera and Víti crater: Arrive at the Askja area and join your guide for a walk to the crater viewpoints. The hike is about 2.5 km and usually takes around 35–45 minutes, with difficulty ranging from easy to moderate depending on snow and conditions.

Lunch break: Enjoy a packed lunch or picnic in the highlands (there are no restaurants in this area). A common stop is near the Dreki mountain hut area before continuing the adventure.

Optional Víti dip (conditions permitting): In late summer, some travelers may choose to take a quick dip in Víti. The water can be chilly-cool, so bring swimwear and a towel if you want the option.

Return to Mývatn: After a full day of highland scenery and geology, drive back to the Lake Mývatn area in the evening.
