Description

Turn a day on Europe’s largest ice cap into a true hands-on adventure, hiking across the shifting blue world of Vatnajökull before learning to climb a glacier wall in an intimate group of no more than four guests.

For travellers who want more than a standard glacier walk, this is a thrilling step deeper into Vatnajökull. The journey combines an immersive hike with a real ice-climbing session, turning blue walls, ancient ash and sculpted ice into your playground for the day.

No prior climbing experience is required. An expert guide manages the ropes and route while the group of no more than four guests enjoys unhurried coaching, more time on the wall and the freedom to progress at a comfortable level.

Itinerary

1

Hali Base Camp

Welcome, equipment and a local glacier story

Meet at the base camp near Jökulsárlón and prepare for the day with mountaineering boots, crampons, helmet, harness and ice axes. The small-group format creates time for questions, personal fitting and a confident start before travelling towards the glacier.

2

Journey towards Vatnajökull

A dramatic approach across glacial country

Travel from Hali towards an outlet of Vatnajökull as mountains, moraine and the immense ice cap fill the horizon. The guide introduces the landscape and explains how the glacier has shaped local farms, waterways and life in Southeast Iceland.

3

Step onto the glacier

Crampons, blue ice and changing formations

After a short walk across the foreland, fit crampons at the ice edge and learn an efficient glacier step. Follow a carefully selected route among ridges, crevasses, ash layers and meltwater features that make every departure visually different.

4

Ice climbing session

Learn the movement and feel the exhilaration

At a suitable ice wall, the guide sets the ropes and demonstrates axe placement, crampon technique and body position. Each guest receives focused coaching and repeated opportunities to climb, with the challenge adapted from an approachable first attempt to something more demanding.

5

Explore and return

More glacier discovery before leaving the ice

Use the remaining glacier time to explore the strongest accessible formations, take photographs and understand how this frozen landscape moves and changes. Return across the foreland and travel back to Hali after an active five-to-six-hour Vatnajökull experience.

Build this unforgettable glacier challenge into a summer journey through Jökulsárlón and Southeast Iceland.

The full experience lasts approximately five to six hours, with around three to four hours devoted to the glacier journey and climbing session.

The advertised maximum is four guests, creating more climbing time, closer coaching and a distinctly personal glacier experience.

Participants must be at least 14 years old and comfortable with a moderate outdoor day on uneven glacier terrain.

Mountaineering boots, climbing crampons, harness, helmet and ice-climbing axes are included, together with professional glacier guiding.

Bring thermal layers, waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses, water and substantial food or snacks for an active day.

Meet at the glacier base camp at Hali, approximately 13 km east of Jökulsárlón and 67 km west of Höfn. Arrive at least 20 minutes before departure.

The current experience is offered from May to September, when the summer glacier route provides access to suitable ice features.

A glacier is continually moving and melting, so the guide chooses the most rewarding suitable wall for current conditions. That changing route is part of what makes the experience unique.
