Description

Step into another world when you explore the fantastic features on the surface of the glacier and its naturally forming ice caves.

On this action packed day tour, you will explore the naturally formed ice caves and ice tunnels of a stunning outlet glacier.

The ice caves, only accessible in winter, open up for exploration when the melt water underneath the glacier freezes over and leaves behind these ice tunnels. After meeting your highly trained and certified glacier guide in Skaftafell, you will be fitted with the required glacier gear we provide, like an ice axe, ice spikes and a helmet. On the way to the glacier, your guide will lead you on an scenic and educational trail in Vatnajökull National Park. The information on this trail focuses on the area's disappearing glacier and geology.

As your guide leads you on to the icy landscape for your glacier walk, you will learn about how they are formed. While in the ice caves, you will have plenty of time to take pictures of the breathtaking surroundings. The melting ice, vivid blue color and tranquility inside of the cave are what make these features of the glacier so spectacular. After exploring the cave, you will return up to its surface. There, your guide will lead you through the ever-changing glacial landscape and crevasses. You end off with a view of the spectacular glacier lagoon before returning to our sales lodge in Skaftafell.

Please note that ice caves are a natural phenomena and the conditions can change depending on weather. Your safety is our first priority so sometimes our tours may be cancelled with short notice due to weather conditions or safety concerns. If this happens, we will always do our best to offer you an alternative tour, if weather permits.

*Due to changes the approach is longer than expected and therefore the duration of the tour is longer. Icelandic Mountain Guides apologizes for any inconvenience this might cause for our guests.

*The Skaftafell parking lot fee is not included in the tour price.
