Description
Trade a short glacier walk for a true high-mountain day on the ice-capped volcano that defines the Snæfellsnes skyline.
This meet-on-location adventure begins at Arnarstapi Center and follows a guide-selected route towards Snæfellsjökull's upper glacier. The approach, equipment briefing, roped glacier travel and descent normally take 6–8 hours across approximately 10 km with about 950 metres of ascent.
The usual high point can be around 1,418 metres. Reaching the true 1,446-metre summit requires a steep final rock-and-ice section and depends entirely on weather, snow, glacier conditions and the group's progress.
Itinerary
- Arnarstapi Center: Meet the guide at 10:00, check clothing and equipment, and review the day’s weather and route.
- Volcanic-slope approach: Walk from the lower mountain towards the glacier edge over changing mountain terrain.
- Glacier briefing: Put on crampons and a harness, learn the day’s rope system and practise efficient movement on the ice.
- Upper-glacier ascent: Continue on the safest suitable line selected for current snow, wind, visibility and crevasse conditions.
- High point or summit attempt: Pause for food and views at the best safe turnaround point; the true summit is attempted only when conditions and progress allow.
- Descent: Retrace the guide-selected route and finish back at the meeting area in Arnarstapi.
