Description

Travel from Reykjavík beneath glacier-capped volcanoes and experience two of South Iceland’s great waterfalls before changing pace completely at the ATV base.

A guided two-hour ride crosses streams, black sand and open volcanic terrain towards the abandoned aircraft, with ocean horizons and Mýrdalsjökull adding scale to the adventure.

This beautifully balanced day combines effortless coach sightseeing with an active experience in one of Iceland’s most otherworldly landscapes.

Itinerary

1

Reykjavík departure

Into the waterfall country

Leave the capital on the Ring Road as lava fields give way to green farms, steep former sea cliffs and the glacier-capped volcanoes that define South Iceland’s extraordinary skyline. There is time to enjoy the atmosphere, hear the story of the landscape and capture photographs before the adventure continues.

2

Seljalandsfoss

The walk-behind waterfall

A slender curtain of glacier water drops around 60 metres from an ancient sea cliff. When the seasonal path is open, the route curves behind the cascade for a spectacular view through falling water.

3

Skógafoss

Power, mist and rainbows

Stand before one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls as the Skógá River plunges in a broad wall of water. The staircase beside the falls opens a sweeping perspective across the coast. There is time to enjoy the atmosphere, hear the story of the landscape and capture photographs before the adventure continues.

4

ATV base and introduction

Prepare for the black-sand ride

Meet the riding guide, receive protective equipment and learn the automatic ATV controls. The introduction makes the experience approachable before the group rolls directly onto Sólheimasandur. There is time to enjoy the atmosphere, hear the story of the landscape and capture photographs before the adventure continues.

5

Sólheimasandur and the DC-3

Two-hour guided ATV adventure

Cross streams and seemingly endless black sand towards the famous aircraft wreck. The silver fuselage, dark volcanic plain, Atlantic horizon and nearby glaciers create one of Iceland’s most cinematic scenes. The changing light, volcanic terrain and wide Icelandic horizon make this a particularly memorable part of the route.

6

Return to Reykjavík

Waterfalls behind, memories ahead

Rejoin the coach after the ride and relax on the evening journey west, watching South Iceland’s mountains and wide lowlands recede in the changing light. The changing light, volcanic terrain and wide Icelandic horizon make this a particularly memorable part of the route.
