Description
Step beneath a moss-covered lava field and enter Raufarhólshellir, one of Iceland’s most impressive lava tunnels. Huge chambers, vivid minerals and sculpted walls reveal the frozen path of an eruption from around 5,200 years ago.
Built walkways and atmospheric lighting make the accessible section easy to enjoy while preserving the drama of the natural cave. Openings in the roof pour daylight into the tunnel, illuminating colours and formations that are invisible from the surface.
The compact one-hour format makes this an excellent addition to a South Iceland self-drive day.
