Description

Experience the secluded beauty of East Iceland in summer on a full-day 4×4 adventure through fertile valleys, deep canyons and remote highland landscapes. This tour is all about contrasts: thundering basalt formations, quiet wilderness roads, warm geothermal water and the stories of life in Iceland’s interior.

Jökuldalur Glacier Valley and waterfall views
We begin by traveling through the scenic Jökuldalur Glacier Valley, where the route passes picture-perfect waterfalls on the way toward one of East Iceland’s most famous natural wonders.

Stuðlagil Canyon
Arrive at Stuðlagil Canyon and admire its remarkable basalt columns and dramatic canyon scenery. In summer, the canyon reveals its bold shapes and textures, making it a standout stop for photos and views.

Hafrahvammagljúfur and a hidden geothermal waterfall
Next, we continue to the deep ravines of Hafrahvammagljúfur and visit a naturally warm geothermal waterfall hidden in Laugarvalladalur Valley. Here you can bathe or shower in warm water where the stream runs into the valley’s main river (bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to soak).

Kárahnjúkar power plant viewpoints
From there we head toward Kárahnjúkar, home to one of Europe’s largest hydroelectric power projects, with epic views over the canyon and surrounding highlands.

Sænautasel turf farm
To finish the day, we visit Sænautasel, a rebuilt Icelandic turf farm that offers a rare feel for life at a remote highland farm around a century ago.
