Itinerary
Hvolsvöllur departure
Set out from the edge of the South Iceland highlands
Meet at the confirmed base in Hvolsvöllur and join your guide for the journey towards Þórsmörk. The day is deliberately flexible, allowing the route to follow the weather, trail conditions and the group’s energy for the most rewarding experience.
South Coast approach
Waterfalls and glacier-volcano scenery
Travel east beneath Eyjafjallajökull, with stops and viewpoints chosen to complement the mountain day. The changing landscape introduces the forces that shaped Þórsmörk: eruptive volcanoes, retreating glaciers and rivers carrying sediment from the highlands.
Krossá river journey
A true 4x4 route into the Valley of Thor
Leave the paved road behind and cross the braided, unbridged rivers that guard Þórsmörk. The capable vehicle turns the approach into part of the adventure as black sands, glacier rivers and steep green ridges close around the valley.
Þórsmörk trailhead
A hike chosen for the day
The guide selects a rewarding trail from options such as Tindfjallahringur, Hvannárgil or Hestagötur. Routes vary from six to twelve kilometres, creating space for quiet forest paths, rocky canyons and the best viewpoints available in current conditions.
Birch forests and canyons
Sheltered valleys beneath three glaciers
Walk through native birch woodland and across terrain carved by ice and rivers. Hidden gullies and sculpted slopes reveal a surprisingly lush side of Iceland, while local stories add depth to a landscape long treasured by Icelandic hikers.
Mountain ridge views
The great panorama of Þórsmörk
Climb towards an open ridge where views can stretch across the braided Krossá river and towards Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. The precise viewpoint changes, but the immense glacier-framed panorama remains the heart of the day.
Return to Hvolsvöllur
A final highland drive after the hike
Rejoin the 4x4 for the river crossings and scenic journey back from Þórsmörk. The return provides time to absorb the day’s contrasts, from quiet birch forest and narrow canyons to the broad volcanic plains of South Iceland.
Choose your date and turn an extraordinary Icelandic landscape into one of the defining memories of your journey.
