A free weekend, a camera and a ticket to Iceland: Robert Irwin's latest escape has all the ingredients of a very good adventure. The Australian conservationist, photographer and television personality has been sharing the waterfalls, black-sand landscapes and wonderfully strange rock formations he discovered during a recent visit.
His explanation for the trip was refreshingly simple: “Had a free weekend. Went to Iceland.” Judging by the photographs, he made those days count.
Irwin's Iceland collection moves from towering water and moss-covered rock to wide, dark stretches of volcanic sand. One photograph captures him with his arms outstretched beneath the waterfall at Gljúfrabúi; another finds him exploring the cave at Gígjagjá, near Hjörleifshöfði on the South Coast.
The cave is often nicknamed the Yoda Cave, thanks to the shape of its opening. A little imagination is all it takes to see the resemblance—and Irwin clearly found time for a playful photograph there, too.
For someone best known for his connection with wildlife and the work of his family at Australia Zoo, it is a different kind of wild encounter: no crocodiles required, just Iceland doing what Iceland does best.
His short Iceland film brings the trip together with an equally uncomplicated message: “Love you, Iceland.” Watch his original Instagram Reel below.
Irwin, the son of the late Steve Irwin, has a longstanding passion for photography alongside his conservation and television work. Iceland appears to have given that creative side plenty to work with.
In a later collection of landscape photographs, he described Iceland as being “like another planet” and said the trip had been a welcome chance to return to his photographic roots. He also promised more photography on his account in 2027—a fitting resolution for someone whose Instagram name is robertirwinphotography.
