Akureyri s the capital of North Iceland and the biggest town outside the Reykjavik area with about 18.500 inhabitants. It is a great location if you like to explore the North of Iceland for couple of days. The next town to the east is Húsavík about 93 kilometers and to the west is Sauðárkrókur about 120 kilometers. Akureyri is also located nearby some of the bigger fishing towns in the North, like Dalvík, Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður.

Akureyri has a beautiful surroundings, down by the ocean is the Old Town with small old colorful houses. Further up in the hills is the newer part of the town, and further Kjarnaskógur forest that is a great area for hiking and enjoying the outdoors. In the mountains is one of the best skiing resorts in Iceland called Hlíðarfjall.

Akureyri has a great swimming pool as well as a good selection of restaurants and accommodations. You can find all the service you need there, a lot of shops and the town is also known for art and museums. You can't leave a good area without trying the ice cream at the ice cream store Brynjuís.
