Description

Meet in Arnarstapi, travel up the mountain road and board a snow-cat for a weather-dependent sightseeing ascent on Snæfellsjökull—without the demands of a glacier hike.

This is a chance to experience the ice-capped heart of the peninsula at closer range, surrounded by lava, ocean horizons and the powerful mountain scenery beneath Snæfellsjökull.

Every part of the route adds a different mood, from quiet fjords and mossy lava to dramatic cliffs and celebrated landmarks.

This is the easier way to experience the height and scale of Snæfellsjökull. It is a sightseeing journey by road vehicle and snow-cat, not a glacier hike, so most of the tour is spent riding rather than walking across the ice.

The group meets at Arnarstapavegur 2 in Arnarstapi and travels a rough mountain pass towards the glacier. At the snow line you transfer to the tracked vehicle and climb as high as weather, ice and crevasse conditions safely allow.

On a clear day the panorama can reach across Breiðafjörður towards Látrabjarg and south over Faxaflói. Those views—and the maximum elevation—are never guaranteed. The main season runs from spring into summer, with other dates sometimes available by request.

The journey begins

Begin at the pickup point shown on your voucher, then watch the landscape open into West Iceland’s coastal plains, lava country and distant glacier-capped mountains.

2

Mountain-pass drive

Scenic road through West Iceland

Travel deeper into Snæfellsnes as the road moves between open farmland, sculpted mountains, lava fields and glimpses of the sea. The changing landscape builds anticipation and shows why the peninsula is often described as Iceland in miniature.

3

Snow-cat transfer

Ride towards the glacier heights

Climb aboard the snow-cat for an exciting journey onto the upper slopes of Snæfellsjökull. As the machine gains height, lava fields, ocean and mountain ranges unfold below in a remarkable panorama across West Iceland.

A high-mountain glacier adventure

Move from the lower volcanic slopes towards the sweeping ice of Snæfellsjökull, with the guide choosing the strongest route for the day. Expanding views across Breiðafjörður, the peninsula and distant Westfjords make the ascent increasingly spectacular.

5

High-point pause

A stop chosen for the day
