Nicole Kidman’s Iceland trip is the sort of itinerary that makes the rest of us want to check a map, a weather forecast and our annual leave at the same time. Her Instagram post is a warm postcard from a country of dramatic detours: time in Akureyri, a visit to Snæfellsnes and an underground performance in Vatnshellir.

She described Iceland as a beautiful country and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. That is a concise way of saying: a northern city, a lava tube and landscapes that consistently behave as though they have a film crew just out of shot.

Akureyri: the northern capital’s big day out

Akureyri makes an excellent base for an Icelandic north-coast escape. It is small enough to explore easily, but Eyjafjörður starts right beside the town—and that means whales, mountain views and a very persuasive reason to keep a warm layer close by.

Nicole’s visit is a timely reminder that Akureyri is much more than a stop on the Ring Road. Between harbour wildlife trips, a walk through town and a long soak at Forest Lagoon, there is plenty to fill a day without ever needing to hurry.

Snæfellsnes: a concert beneath the lava

On Snæfellsnes, the itinerary headed underground to Vatnshellir, an ancient lava tube inside Snæfellsjökull National Park. Reports from the visit described an intimate performance by opera singer Alexandra Chernyshova in the cave—a suitably theatrical setting for a place made by lava rather than a stage crew.

Above ground, Snæfellsnes rewards visitors with black beaches, fishing villages, sea cliffs, lava fields and the unmistakable profile of Kirkjufell. It is one peninsula, but it has a rather unfair amount of Iceland packed into it.
