This is Raufarhólshellir at its wildest. After leaving the illuminated visitor route, the cave opens into a succession of natural passages where twisted lava, immense darkness and unusual formations reveal the full power of the eruption that created the tunnel.
A specialist guide leads the way over uneven lava and through more technical sections with the equipment and support needed for a confident adventure. The reward is the Lava Falls, a beautiful frozen cascade of rock in a part of the cave few visitors ever reach.
