Description

A one-way Breiðafjörður ferry crossing from Stykkishólmur to Flatey, with island and skerry views and a reserved stop that must be booked in advance.

The sea route turns travel into part of the experience, opening wide views across Breiðafjörður and its island-filled waters while linking two of West Iceland’s most characterful regions.

Over about 2 hours, each change in landscape adds a new chapter, making this an excellent choice for travellers who want more than a quick viewpoint tour.

This is transport to Flatey, not a guided sightseeing tour. The approximately ninety-minute crossing leaves Stykkishólmur harbour and threads into Breiðafjörður, a broad bay scattered with islands, reefs and tidal channels.

A Flatey stop must be booked in advance; it is not enough to board a through-sailing and decide en route. Travellers continue on foot on the island, so check baggage, onward accommodation and return arrangements before departure.

The official 2026 schedule lists Særún services to and from Flatey from 16 June through 23 July. Vessel assignments and departure times can change, so the official sailing schedule and your voucher are the final authority.

Itinerary

1

Check in at Stykkishólmur

The journey begins

Meet your guide at the confirmed location and settle in for a beautiful journey west, where Reykjavík gives way to broad bays, moss-covered lava and the mountain skyline of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

2

Leave Stykkishólmur harbour

Colourful harbour town

Stykkishólmur looks across the countless islands of Breiðafjörður from a harbour lined with colourful historic houses. Its elegant streets, striking church and maritime atmosphere make it one of West Iceland’s most charming towns.

3

Breiðafjörður crossing

Sail through the island-filled bay

4
