Dyrfjöll (Door-mountain) are uniquely majestic mountains of the eastern part of Iceland, between Egilsstaðir town and Borgarfjarðar Eystri town. Mountain range that was built up for more than 10 million years ago, but at that time there were active volcanoes in this area.

After the mountains had build up the ice age glacier began to break them down and shape them as we see them today. The glacier broke on either side of the mountain and formed the door or the pass. When the glaciers started to melt and then disappeared from the area for about 10 to 12 years ago they left behind another phenomenon called Stórurð, which are large tuff rocks and stones spread over a large area in Uraðrdalur valley

Stórurð

Stórurð is the area west of Dyrfjöll mountains in Urðardalur valley. Between Egilsstaðir town and Borgarfjörður Eystri. It contains a unique natural phenomenon where Ice Age glacier left behind large rocks and stones of tuff when melted and disappeared from the area for about 10 to 12 thousand years ago. Big mossy tuff rocks and small ponds and streams characterize the area.

It takes about 3 hours to hike from Vatnsskarði to Stórurð, crossing is quite difficult area on the way, entire day of hiking and hikers need to be well equipped.
