Ice Cave Tours FAQ
Winter, usually from October to April, offers the widest choice of natural blue-ice caves. Katla tours and the man-made Langjökull ice tunnel operate across a broader part of the year.
Choose Vík for Katla, Skaftafell or Jökulsárlón for Vatnajökull, and Húsafell, Klaki Base Camp, Gullfoss or Geysir for Langjökull. Full-day transport is also available from Reykjavík.
Natural caves form and change within moving glacier ice. The Into the Glacier tunnel is man-made and offers guided visits inside Langjökull throughout the year.
The Vatnajökull, Skaftafell and Sólheimajökull sections include cave-and-hike options. Compare the duration, minimum age and difficulty on each tour page.
Choose a full-day Katla and South Coast tour, Into the Glacier or a Langjökull snowmobile combination. Private full-day options are listed separately.
Guides assess conditions on the day and may choose another safe cave or ice formation, adjust the route or cancel when the glacier cannot be visited safely.
Depending on the tour, glacier equipment can include a helmet, crampons, harness and headlamp. Check the exact inclusions and clothing requirements before booking.
Compare minimum age, duration, walking distance and difficulty. Shorter cave visits may suit families better than glacier hikes, climbing or snowmobiling.
